Marketing Ideas for Small Business BESIDES Pay-Per-Click

Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising is expensive, and if not done surgically, can be ineffective in driving leads and phone calls. These are a few ideas to generate leads without paying for them.

Generate more email leads and phone calls without having to use Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising

A friend and small business owner (who owns a power washing company) asked me a very simple, but thought-provoking question:
Google AdWords and Facebook Ads are not producing enough leads - any ideas?”
Yes, I have a LOT of ideas to help drive quality traffic that generates leads without spending a dime on pay-per-click (PPC) advertising… Here are a few, off the top of my head:

  • Consistently write blog articles, optimized for organic (left-side) search. These are articles that identify a problem that your product or service can solve, and lets people know that you are both AWARE of that problem and can SOLVE that problem for them. If the content is compelling enough, people will share it with their friends and fans without your having to pay for it.
  • Think about what your customers will type into Google to solve those problems and focus on those keywords when writing your articles. Use tools like Yoast SEO for WordPress and Google AdWords Keyword Planner.
  • Try taking some before and after pics of work you’ve done and posting them to Tumblr, Pinterest, Flickr and Instagram, using descriptive captions and tags, which Google indexes.
  • You can also create short videos right from your smartphone that talk about and/or demonstrate what the results of your product or service can help, then distribute them across every platform you can think of - blog, YouTube, Vimeo, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, TumblrFlickr and more.

Remember that you’re not really selling a product or service; you’re selling the RESULTS that your product or service delivers. In my friend’s case, he’s selling a cleaner house/deck/driveway, he’s selling the time that his customer saves by not having to invest to do such work, and he’s selling the savings in aggravation from having a spouse, parent or boss complain about the current dirty look.
